Job Description

Purpose/Description-

  • Works under general supervision of Surgical Services Manager to provide endoscopy, sterile processing, purchasing, and ordering responsibilities for the department. Will place charges and work with surgery manager and charge nurse to streamline that process. May need to assist with room turnover and terminal cleaning of O.R., Maintain par levels of all supplies in the perioperative area.

Requirements

Education and Experience-

Education:

  • High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Graduate from a Surgical Technology technical school, LPN program, RN program or military training program.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

  • LPN license (if LPN)
  • CST or CORT certification is required as defined in the Surgical Technician Licensure Update
  • Completion of an RN training program will be accepted in place of Certification
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) required at time of hire. 
  • Basic skills and related to aseptic/ sterile technique and knowledge of surgical instrumentation preferred

 

Experience:

  • (2) Years’ Minimum of surgical scrubbing experience in a hospital or outpatient clinic

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities-

Essential Duties:

  • Holding retractors, equipment, and/or limbs under direct supervision of surgeon.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform in the role of surgical scrub by anticipating the needs of the surgeon and keeping the circulating nurse informed of any needs throughout a procedure
  • Ensure that all supplies, equipment, and medications are assembled prior to the procedure
  • Innovative in maintaining high standards and quality in the facilitation of cost savings and containment
  • Efficient and organized in skills to assist team with safe and appropriate operating room turnover times
  • Directs ancillary personnel participating in room turnover
  • Provides assistance and support as needed to members of the surgical team
  • Utilizes knowledge base to assist with orientation, training, and the education of new personnel
  • Demonstrates appropriate action in emergency situations, demonstrates awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors, and employees
  • Identifies and reports environmental concerns to the management team
  • Follows CDC isolation guidelines, demonstrates appropriate use of PPE, performs hand washing according to policy; strictly adheres to all infection control practices and diligently monitors aseptic technique of the entire surgical team; takes immediate corrective action for breaks in technique
  • Supports the customer and employee satisfaction activities of the organization
  • Maintains good relationships with physicians, management, other departments and staff
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Ensures all performed surgical duties stay within the scope of practice
  • Keeps up on organizational education

 

Physical Demands:

  • Light lifting/carrying - Must be able to lift boxes and supplies of between 0 and 35 lbs.
  • Moderate lifting - Must be able to lift larger boxes or supplies to and from dollies or cart.
  • Moderate pushing - Must be able to push a dolly or cart weighing up to 150 lbs. about 50 yards.

Reaching above shoulders - Must be able to put supplies weighing up to 35 lbs. up on a shelf and take them down.
