Job Description


The Regular Charge Nurse assists administration and nursing department managers in the day-to-day management of clinical operations in assigned patient care areas and on their assigned shift. The charge nurse is a clinical expert who serves in a leadership role to assure that all members of the nursing team under their direction provide care that is consistent with accepted standards of nursing practice, the Oregon Nurse Practice Act and Coquille Valley Hospital policies and procedures. This employee serves as a role model and resource for staff providing education as needed or directed. The charge nurse promotes an environment of safety and assists staff in clinical decision making and the resolution of immediate patient, family and provider concerns.  In collaboration with the unit manager, the supervisor supports the development, management, scheduling, assignment and evaluation of the nursing staff and patient care activities. The Charge Nurse is responsible for the allocation and management of departmental resources that promote optimal efficiency and patient outcomes on their shift. The Charge Nurse actively participates in the implementation and promotion of the hospital and departmental goals and strategic plan including the completion of projects and quality initiatives as required.


Education and Experience-


  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the State of Oregon
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited Nursing Program is preferred; Associate Degree with an advanced degree in a related healthcare field is accepted (ie. Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Public Health etc).
  • Current Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS, HCP).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) within 3 months of appointment.



  • Minimum of three (3) years full-time post-licensure clinical nursing experience in an acute setting
  • Prior experience at the unit based charge nurse level
  • Board certification in a hospital based clinical nursing specialty or in nursing administration preferred

  • Computer proficiency

  • Strong problem solving, decision making and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in use of computer including MS Office applications.
  • Ability to manage complex operations and diverse personnel.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
