Job Description

Purpose/Description-

  • Applies appropriate ICD and CPT diagnostic and procedural codes for data retrieval, analysis and claims processing for a variety of services including inpatient, ancillary, outpatient, physician offices, emergency room, behavioral health and ambulatory care.

Requirements

Education and Experience-

Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED Required.
  • Completion of classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-9, ICD-10 and CPT coding conventions, and disease processes required. 

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years, five years preferred, inpatient and outpatient ICD and CPT coding and abstracting of multiple case types within last two years required.

 

Licenses/Certifications: 

  • AHIMA or AAPC certification in HIM/coding required

 

Duties and Responsibilities-

Essential Duties:

  • This position is responsible for reviewing documentation to make sure the documentation supports the levels or types of service billed and /or assign level service based on documentation.
  • Ensure the documentation is in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid billing regulations and documentation guidelines, CPT documentation guidelines and PATH rules.
  • Responsible for meeting performance standards set for accurate and timely submission of charges for professional services rendered at Coquille Valley Hospital. 
  • Provide technical expertise regarding a broad range of third party payer and reimbursement issues.
  • Potential to provide physician education on billing and coding practices and advise physicians of coding changes or changes in regulations.
  • Coding assignment will vary based on assignment and need.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, and employees. 
  • Ability to mentor/train other coders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Light lifting/carrying - Must be able to lift boxes and supplies of between 0 and 35 lbs.
  • Moderate lifting - Must be able to lift larger boxes or supplies to and from dollies or cart.
  • Moderate pushing - Must be able to push a dolly or cart weighing up to 150 lbs. about 50 yards.
  • Reaching above shoulders - Must be able to put supplies weighing up to 35 lbs. up on a shelf and take them down.
