Job Description

Purpose/Description-

 

The Self-Pay Representative assists in the caring analysis and resolution of patient issues and concerns regarding patient accounts. Analyzes and resolves patient accounts issues identified via telephone or direct patient interviews. Accurately documents patient interventions based on departmental protocols, policies and procedures, and in compliance with state and federal regulations.  Processes financial assistance applications. Arranges payment options with patients. Maintains excellent working relationships with Coquille Valley Hospital staff as well as community providers and their staff.

Requirements

Education and Experience-

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required

 

Experience:

The Self Pay Representative must have strong verbal and written communication skills. Medical terminology knowledge is recommended.  Previous experience required in one or more of the following roles:

  • Hospital or Physician Office Setting
  • Customer Service

 

Duties and Responsibilities-

Essential Duties:

  • Financial responsibilities include the ability to analyze patient account information for patient account issue resolution.  Also includes the preparation and maintenance of reports for the customer service function of the Patient Financial Services Department.
  • Exhibit basic knowledge in billing and collections functions. 
  • Read an estimation of benefits and explain to patients.
  • Work collaboratively with the Coquille Valley Hospital employees to resolve all issues involving patient finances. 
  • Answers incoming telephone calls.
  • Clear effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Performs financial assessments for individuals that are uninsured and underinsured to determine payment arrangements and qualification for state and local insurance programs.
  • Completes applications for programs like Oregon Health Plan, Hospital Presumptive Eligibility, Health First Financial, and Pharmaceutical programs.
  • Reviews daily reports to identify self-pay patients.
  • Assists patients with billing inquiries, setting up payment arrangements, financial assistance, and generating patient estimates.
  • Reviews financial assistance applications received and determines approval.
  • Identifies delinquent accounts and contacts patients.
  • Calculate and collect payments from patients in person and on the phone.
  • Respond to collection agency correspondence and reports.
  • May review returned mail to skip trace.
  • Thoroughly and timely work accounts in work queues as defined by policies and procedures.
  • Document account activity accurately and promptly during or immediately following each patient encounter.
  • Correctly identify and update various types of insurance.
  • Maintain basic understanding and knowledge of health insurance plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains standards of service excellence by following AIDET.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 10 pounds 75 % of the time and up to 25 pounds 25% of the time.
  • Close vision is required, distance or clear vision at 20 ft. or more and the ability to observe an area that can be seen to move up and down or left and right.
