Job Description

Purpose/Description-

  • The Sterile Processing Technician cares for and maintains all surgical instrumentation and sets up supplies and instruments for surgery cases.

Requirements

Education and Experience-

Education:

  • High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and surgical instrumentation.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician preferred but not required.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) required at time of hire. 

 

Experience:

  • (2) Years’ experience in surgical setting, Proficient with endoscopy. Understands sterilization techniques and utilizes such technique in all sterile procedures.  Ability to work well under pressure.  Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, physicians and patients. Possesses the ability to schedule surgical/medical procedures and collect patient data. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities-

Essential Duties:

  • Cleans, disinfects, decontaminates, and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment using appropriate methods, substances and equipment.
  • Properly disposes of bio hazardous substances, chemicals, medical waste, and unusable equipment and supplies
  • Receives, stocks, packages, and distributes medical instruments.
  • Performs and documents required quality assurance testing and inspection on stock.
  • Properly disposes of bio hazardous substances, chemicals, medical waste, and unusable equipment and supplies.
  • Keeps up on organizational education.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Light lifting/carrying - Must be able to lift boxes and supplies of between 0 and 35 lbs.
  • Moderate lifting - Must be able to lift larger boxes or supplies to and from dollies or cart.
  • Moderate pushing - Must be able to push a dolly or cart weighing up to 150 lbs. about 50 yards.

Reaching above shoulders - Must be able to put supplies weighing up to 35 lbs. up on a shelf and take them down.
